Theories-Andrew Goodwin



Goddwin produced a book called 'Dancing in the Distraction Factory' where he stated that the editing style is focused on three main areas:
-Illustration
-Amplification
-Disjuncture

These three main areas are further split into other elements of Andrew Goodwins theory, searching as analysing the lyrics, the music and the image of a band/artist.
They are as follows:
Illustration
Music-The shots always cut on the beat
Lyrics-The images illustrate the literal meaning or feeling of the lyrics, mainly just wih the band singing and dancing.
Band image- The band simply singing/dancing/playing instruments, usually dressed as would be expected of the genre.


Amplification
Music-Shots cut on and off the beat, to emphasise certain features
Lyrics-The images amplify the lyrics and create a specific narrative, could be used as the narrative isn't obvious enough in the lyrics.
Band Image-The band could take on fictinal roles in the narrative.



Disjuncture
Music-Shots cut off the beat, this is perhaps seen in a low budget video or is a sign of a not very creative music video, however this is not always the case.
Lyrics-The images do not relate to the lyrics that are used, sometimes used by bands/artists who are already very well established, and who can afford to take the risk.

Band Image-A band/artist takes on an image that's completely opposite of their expected image.

Multiplicity shots of incomplete, obsure parts of a narrative are used.
The order of the shots is unconventional and shifts variablly with no shot order.
Time, space, character and narrative are revealed incompletely.
Discontinuity is used.
Visual Hooks are used.


THE PHANTASMAGORICAL BODY
Shots are put together to encourage the fantasy body, ideally known as the 'perfect' body. In an edited cut of the video we are shown different shots of the body to build up the youth and beauty of the body. This artist then becomes admirable and motivational for their target audience, and then is more likely to create more publicity for their music video.

Theories- Borewell and Thompsons theory

Graphic
The transitiohns between each shot can be linked though the same 'pictorial qualities' like shape, patterns and movement of light and can also cause abrupt cuts when contrasting qualities are used.


Graphic Match
This cut emphasizes between the graphic and the similarities of the shots.
Graphic Continuity:
This is used when the director wants to establish a sense of continuity and often narrative in a music video.


Graphic Discontinuity
This is use when contrasting colours and shapes are used in a shot.

Spatial
This transition is used to relate each shot to one another through it's setting and location.
Continuity Editing
An establishing shot followed by a range of small range shots are shown to be in the same location and time frame.
Kuleshoveffect
There is no establishing shot but the audience assume that it is the same time and location.
Cross Cutting
This when seperature places are being shown parrallel to eachother, this usually shows what is happening in different locations during the same time in the frame.


Temportal
This is when the of action is manipulated. It is usually done through flashbacks and flashforwards, and can be used to create or answear questions within the narrative. Ellipsis in time are often used to remove boring clips that would create viewer fatigue. 


Empty Frames
This shows the figure of interest moving of the frame followed by them walking into an empty frame usually in a different location. 


Cutaway
This shot shows an event happening for a short amount of time somewhere else.
Rhythmic
This is the duration of each shot in relation to the beat or tempo. It can create tension when the length is steadily increasing and exciting when it is becoming shorter. When a shot is cut on the beat it creates a smooth flow and when it is cut off the beat it usually feels abrupt and imcomplete.

Pop Music Video Questionaire Results


These results show the age of  the person that took our questionnaire. As you can see the ages between 14-17 were our most popular age group which is good because that is the age group that we are trying to target with our music video, therefore our answers will be extremely relevant and useful when planning and preparing for our pop music video. However pop music does still target other age groups so the answers from the 18's+ will also be extremely useful.



These are the results from what genre people most enjoy. Our results show that pop, R&B and rock are the most popular within our age range. Therefore our music video is likely to be more of a success as we are clearly targeting the right age groups. However, the song that we have chosen does have a rock vibe to it, so by combining both of these aspects it will hopefully be more of a sucess with our target audience.



Our third question was 'how does a pop music video make you feel?' As you can see from our results the majoirty of people taking our questionnaire either says happy or extremely. Therefore this gives me and my group a heads up that vibrant colours, an upbeat tempo and a good narrative will probably be efficient for our music video for us to reflect a happy mood.



This question was worded slightly differently to our others. We asked people how important music was in their life from scale of 1-5, with 5 being the most important. Half of the people that were asked this question answered 5, which was being extremely important. The age group that we are targeting are clearly passionate abot their music and therefore I think that it's important that we construct a powerful narrative that will intrigue our target audience.



We asked our audience what platform that they play their music on. Even though the majority said iTunes, Youtube was still very high up their. As our target audience is young they may not always be able to afford songs from iTunes, therefore they'll probably end up going on Youtube to listen to music where it's free, and this will help to promote video's.l



We asked how often our audience watch music video's. Over half replied everyday. Youtube is currently one of the most used internet sites and is great promotion and publicity for artists, so if someone is listening to music everyday I highly doubt that they are downloading music everyday because that would cost a fortune. Therefore you could assume that they go onto YouTube to listen to some of the music, and this promotes the music video so it is key that you create a music video that really engages your target audience.



Finally, we asked what people look for most in a pop video. A majority of people said that they most look forward to seeing the artist, so aswell as having a strong narrative it is also key to include your artist in the music video. Another high factor was dancing, which me and my group are going to incorprate into our video in quite a quirky way instead of just an obvious dance routine shoved infront of our audiences. Location, the song in general and costumes were also one of the highest factors of our questionnaire. As me and my group have already started preparing for our music video it's quite hand that the name of our song is filmed in the name's location, connoting the lyrics and narrative of our story.

Pop Music Questionnaire



Here I have screen grabbed the Questionnaire we have created from the website Survey Monkey. This is a great website and piece of technology which allows you the create the questionnaire to how you want it, by providing a range of question types from open and closed with text box's and tick boxes. This is good in a questionnaire as it allows you to recieve a range of answers and get a more in depth answer like their opinions and what they would recomend etc. We have created 10 questions which will recieve answers that will help us with our video, and allow us to analyse the results and make decisions from there.

Record Label research 2.


HistoryAtlantic Records (Atlantic Recording Corporation) is an American record label best known for its many recordings of rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and jazz.Over its first 20 years of operation Atlantic earned a reputation as one of the most important American independent recording labels, specializing in jazz, R&B and soul recordings by African-American artists, a position greatly enhanced by its distribution deal with Stax Records.
In 1967 Atlantic became a wholly owned subsidiary of Warner Bros.-Seven Arts, now the Warner Music Group, and expanded into rock and pop music, signing Cream,Led Zeppelin, Yes and Foreigner. In 2004 Atlantic Records and its sister label Elektra Records merged into Atlantic Records Group.

Artists
Atlantic is a huge company and have worked/ is working with artists such as Trey Songs, Kid Rock, James Blunt, Wiz Khalifa, Sean Paul, Flo Rida, Missy Elliot, Jason Mraz, Estelle and Tracy Chapman. Those are just a few of the artists who they have contracts with etc.

Syco Music Label




Syco Music is joint between Simon Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment. Syco Music rarely scouts for new artists, as the artists they sign are usually developed through television, and has a strong focus on promoting these artists through this format. Syco Music is also run by Sonny Takhar Siobhan Greene, and together Syco works with a number of US record labels to release albums in the states and in China.
Syco television creates and produces the X-Factor, and their record label signs the winners and on occasion maybe the other contestants. Globally, more than 100 million records have been sold by all of the artists launched through the series, including over 90 #1 singles and 150 top ten records. One of Syco's most successful artists is 2006's X-Factor winner Leona Lewis, and has become one of the top female artists in the world. Her first single 'Bleeding Love' brought out in 2007 sold over 20 million worldwide, and her first album 'Spirit' selling 7 million worldwide. The most unsuccessful artist to come from Syco Music is Steve Brookstein, who's ablum sold as little as 100,000.
The company has also produced some specials for broadcast in the U.K that is usually focused on music. These include 'Take That:For the Record,' 'Westlife's:She's the One,' and 'Paul Potts: By Royal Command.' Syco Music also produced a Susan Boyle special for ITV in December 2009.

In January 2010 it had been announced that Cowell had extended his long-term deal with Sony. This will still operate under the name of Syco and it will expand it's production of television, film, music and digital content. It will be co-owned by Sony and Cowell although British retail Sir Phillip Green (owner of Arcadia) will be a shareholder and will act as Simon Cowell's advisor.

The company will retain it's UK offices in London but will also open an office in Los Angeles as Syco want to concentrate on America's Got Talent and launching the U.S version of the X-Factor in September 2011, which is said to be the most anticipated television show in the history of television.

A lot of their promotional material is done through social networking and online material. Syco have their own Facebook page and as you may know Facebook is one of the most successful social networking sites as it has over 750 million users, with users spending over 700 billion minutes on facebook per month. Therefore facebook is an incredible platform for Syco to sell themselves to their audience.

What is also extremely clever that they do is use Facebook as a platform to not only advertise their company, but have listed all the other pages that they've liked which include every artist or television show that Syco has signed or created, yet again promoting their artists and televison programmes etc. Some of Syco's British artists (for example Olly Murs) are not known over in the states. However the Syco page of facebook is avaliable for all countries to access and therefore it could be suggested that they're also promoting their artists to other countries to help them break the market over there.


Another platform that Syco uses is another social networking site called Twitter. Twitter is amongst the top ten most used social networking sites, with 106 million users and 200 million tweets being sent each day. What Twitter also provides for it's users is top trends. Twitter Top Trending topics identifies topics that are extremely popular across the world, this is to help people discover the most breaking 'news.' Therefore by having a twitter account if Syco was to become a trending topic or one of their artists were this is also an excellent platform to promote their music. On his official website not only does he advertise Syco music label but advertises the XFactor USA, which Syco television advertise. However as Syco label only sign artists from television contests etc, it coincides extremely well with the Syco's music.

Coventions of my chosen genre (Pop)

Usually extremely performance based
In a pop video you will generally see the artist performing a catchy, fun dance routine or being in character. They will often have extreme outfits that will catch the audiences eye. However if it is a female pop artist then their performance will often be quite 'sexy' and will be seen wearing revealing outfits to connote with their sexual imagery. I used Katy Perry as a prime example as in her video 'California Girls' she's dressed in sweets and sugary things, emphasising how desirable she is. She still uses vibrant colours to connote with her 'feel good' song about the benefits of living in california and about how desirable the girls that live there are. Here is a 30 second clip of the video where I think the video is extremely performance based.




Extremely accurate lip syncing
I think that lip syncing is extremely accurate in pop video's. In more so than others, pop artists image is extremely important and are often the main focus in their video's. They are perceived as being perfect to their target audience, and therefore everything about them in the video should also be perfect. I think that this is especially important for boybands, as by lip syncing their cheesy lyrics directly into the camera it engages their teenage girl audience who like to image that it's them who are being sung too.

Narrative story that reflects the lyrics of the song
Whether it's a positive or a negative narrative, a narrative story that reflects the lyrics of the song are key in a pop music video. Even though boys or girls that are falling in love are probably the most popular in the pop music video's, I think that Eminem and Rihanna's music video 'Love the Way you Lie' was the most successful pop song and video for 2010. I think that the narrative is extremely key for a pop music video as the narrative in their song is often unrealistic, so therefore by having an over exaggerated narrative it engages their target audience. Here is another clever narrative.





Artists are always glamourous
Pop music video's will always focus mainly on the image of the artist. They are often portrayed as being beautiful and glamours, and both male and female artists are seen as sexy and fashion icons. Therefore in some of their music videos they are seen in outrageous costumes and fancy outfits, often which will cause shock and will promote their video and their song. I used Cheryl Cole as a demonstration as she is a pop artist that is mainly successful because of how she looks, rather than the music that she produces. However, here is another clip of a pop artist that is known for their outrageous and glamourous image in their music videos. 




Music Video 5-Jason Mraz 'I'm yours'

The second video I will be analysing is 'I'm Yours' by Jason Mraz. 
The video’s opening scene is an overhead shot of a private jet a in an airport. It sets up the next scene where Mraz is seated, supposedly, in that same airplane.
Some of the locations we see in the video are an airport, in the back of a pick up truck/ taxi, an apartment with a fish tank, a skateboard park, a waterfall and the beach. 

I really like the underwater shots they take of the men and women swimming. It creates a fun and enjoyable atmosphere to the video as well as the other shots at the beach of people surfing and socialising. The video uses a variety of shots, for example the establishing shot of the waterfall which was taken in a helicopter as it's a high angle shot. Also the close ups of Mraz allow us to see that he's relaxed and is having a good time. 

Ed Sheeran 'The A-Team'




Ed Sheeran fits into the genre of Pop, however this music video doesn't contain all the typical conventions of a Pop video. The whole video is in black and white, which creates a very dark,eerie mood. However, it fits with the meaning and lyrics of the song well. There is a range of interesting camera shots used within this video, including close-ups, long shots, and over the shoulder shots. This adds to the suspense and exitement of the video and gives different points of view of the frame to the audience. There is also very good effects used in the video, especially when the girl is sat on the floor and everything around her is moving fast. This gives the viewers an understanding of what her life is like and how she feels, which helps to generate sympathy for the character. Costume is also another aspect which makes this video succesfull as it shows the viewers exactly what this character is like and what the video is about.
Here are some key scenes in this pop music video.
As I mentioned previously this pop video does go against the stereotype of the conventions of a pop video. Pop video's generally create an over dramatic, happy feeling whereas this has an eerie sadness about it. The editing in this scene emphasises this, but I cut out this particular scene as this editing is something that I would like to try for when I create my own music video. By speeding up the background image of the city and the people of London, this connotes her loneliness and how everyone is moving forward or are busy doing something with their lives, whereas she's trapped in a world fuelled by chaos and drugs and is never going anywhere. Also I think that the contrast of the black and white colours also emphasises the seperation between herself and the rest of the world.

Music Video 3-James Morrisson


This video is set in various places throughout Los Angeles, and we can tell this as on the motorway we see the sign for the 110 freeway, whilst james is in a taxi. We also see him in the video by a pool, arriving at a hotel, and then him singing on stage. The video also has shots of Morrison in a bar and coffee-shop. The video ends with him walking alone. These shots are quite similar to each other as they range from a small variety of long, medium and close up shots, however with imaginative and compositions within them, by revealing settings, locations and facial components and expressions.
Our first impressions to this video is that it's quite low and sad due to the body language he is showing us, by looking down, away from the camera, singing with his eyes closed at times and having quite a frumpy posture. On the other hand this shows he's in deep thought and very emotional about something, and by this reflection he is proving to be a very good performer as he can put across the image and atmosphere that he wants. Furthermore he is always alone, except for in the studio however nobody talks to him. This could emphasise his lonliness and the meaning of the song, of maybe that he lost someone and grieving or suffering.

Music Video 2- Eminem Ft Rihanna 'Love the way you lie.'


This video is a prime example of a music video that has a narrative story that reflects the lyrics of the song.
The first shot is a close up of one of the artists, shown lip syncing the words to the song. I think that we are introduced to the music video with this shot as Rihanna is one of the most successful pop artists, and therefore would automatically intrigue her fans. This is also the first time that any of her fans saw her bright red hair for the first time, which would then become a massive trend for teenage girls/young adults across many different countries. As Rihanna is a fashion icon by introducing her hair for the first time at the start of the music video this also grabs the audiences attention, and therefore cause people to talk about it via social networking which helps promote the video and her music. The close up is also used so that it is evident for the audience to read her facial expressions, which are stern and mean which connote with the lyrics of the song which theme hatred and anger.
The second shot is a mid shot of the female character used in this music video. The female character is Megan Fox who is an actress best known for her apperance. Having a celebrity involved in your music video also helps creates publicity aswell as intriguing Megan Fox's fans into listening to the song or viewing the music video. The background is parrallel to the foreground, as the background is located in a stereotypically ordinary house. However, the foreground image is of Megan Fox who is cupping her hands to hold fire. This contrast reflects how her and her boyfriend may appear to be an ordinary couple, but behind closed doors it's destructive and dangerous.
The third shot shows the second artist Eminem who is also incredibly famous. This is a beautifully framed shot as it is located in a deserted field as the sun sets. Even though Eminem isn't always centred in the middle of the frame, the open space area allows the audience to divert straight to him. As he lip syncs in this shot his body language and gestures suggest that he is angry and frustrated, something that rappers are stereotypically associated with. This shot is one of the only shots that uses high key lighting, therefore this being the only shot that connotes any positivity. However, I think that they have used this location when shooting Eminem's scene to contrast the different emotions conveyed. The location lifts the video whereas eminem brings negativity with his angry lyrics and gestures. You could suggest that this is used so that their audience has mixed emotions and feelings, just like both the male and female characters do in the music video.
As the music video progresses the lyrics are reinforced by the emphasis of the two lead characters. In the background

Music Video 1- Daniel Powter 'Bad Day'


As me and my group are looking into a male pop artist for our music video we decided that looking into male pop artists would be appropriate for our research. I chose Daniel Powter's 'Bad Day' as I think that it has elements that every pop video should have. From the cinematography to the mise-en scene I think that he targets his audience and draws them in.
The first shot is a high angled shot that is split screened. The high angled shot is used because they're shown asleep in their bed, connoting that they're tired and therefore at their weakness. It could also portray them as vulnerable as they don't want to get out of bed in the morning as every day for them is a 'bad day.' I think that they use them getting out of bed and appearing weak as one of the first shots as neither one of them has met each other yet and therefore as the song progresses their moods will change. I think that this is also emphasis by the use of high key lighting as it's a representation of a new day and a new start, connoting that things are about to get better and pick up.
I used this second shot as it is a complete contrast to the first. A mid shot is used to convey how happy a couple are on a train. Their use of body language and gesture reinforce how fond they are of one another, and how he's seen as the alpha male by looking after her and keeping her safe whilst she sleeps. This only antagonizes the audience has they're able to relate to both the characters who are looking for love. I would say that Daniel Powter targets teenage girls/young adults in this video, who stereotypically like love stories and happy endings, and therefore you cannot help but assume that this video will have a happy ending.
Shot three is beautifully framed, using the rule of thirds technique. You could almost say that this is nearly symmetrical, apart from the fact that Daniel Powter is directly centered in the middle. The use of the extreme long shot emphasis the metaphorical meaning as to why the artist is presented as a tiny figure amongst the big city. Daniel Powter represents how both the male and female character feel in this music video. They feel consumed and swallowed whole by this city, leaving them lonely amongst a city full of life and energy. That is why I think that the location has been chosen cleverly, inside of in a small park or in a house of some sort. Through analysing this particular shot I learned that location and setting is key when planning or filming your music video. You have to think about it carefully in order to help convey your message to your target audience.
The third shot is another split screen shot of the two main characters. By allowing the audience to recognise that they're so similar yet they have never met intrigues the audience and leaves them feeling excited as we're given the impression that they will meet by the end of this video which is reinforced by the split screen being symmetrical to one another. By always presenting these characters on their own this connotes how both of them are so lonely, and how they need eachother. The way they're positioned and their body language make it evident of how vulnerable they are which rewinds us back to the third shot of how small and useless they feel in this big city. Even though there are elements of high key lighting used in some area's the colours used are pretty dull and dreary. In not one shot is anything remotely bright or vibrant. This has been framed deliberately as they wanted the locations and setting to have connotations of sadness, and that the colours are dull just like their life is.
I love how the fifth shot is framed and I think that it has great connotations. The over the shoulder shot is specifically used to disguise the girls face as she stares out of the window. You could suggest that she is staring out of the window because she thinks that there is more to life out there, or to be more specific some one out there. Her face is hidden from the camera because she feels like she has no purpose yet, and therefore she is a nobody and no identity. Her posture is slouched connoting that she is fed up with everything and tired. She is staring at the shut door/window because she feels like she's stuck behind a wall, unable to progress any further. I think the use of all these connotations are so that the audience is able to relate and easily understand what is going on, as that is key in a music video.
The sixth and seventh shot are near enough identical, yet again hiding each others identity. This is because they're communicating through drawings on a wall, and therefore have never met each other. The girl is very pessimistic as she draws a raincloud over the photo of the lady, as she is representing herself and how she feels. However, when the male character see's this drawing he then goes on to draw an umbrella over the lady. The drawing of these objects are metaphorically used to represent each character. She feels like everyday is a bad day and that she never has any luck (hence the raincloud.) However he is represented as the umbrella, who's there to metaphorically save her from the rain and brighten up her day (as cheesy as it sounds.)
In shot eight we come to the climax of the video, where you could suggest that the picture becomes a reality for both characters. A low angle shot is used so that the male character and the umbrella can appear to be more powerful and have more of an impact in the scene. The costumes/hair and make up are used cleverly in this scene as they have made the female character's clothing and hair all wet in the rain. I think that this only emphasises her vulnerability and the mood that she portrays. This contrasts to the male characters clothing, and for the first time in the music video we realise that there is a different between them. Stereotypically the male character is presented as strong and powerful, whereas the female character is vulnerable and weak.
My ninth and last shot is of the artist lip syncing the song. I included this screen grab as my last shot because even though this pop music video tells a clever and interesting story you'll normally find in pop that they always use lip syncing. You could stereotypically suggest that this is because pop is probably one of the few genre's that focuses a lot more on how the artist is presented or what they look like than others. Therefore, by using close ups of young, attractive men it is going to appeal widely to their target audience of young/teenage girls.

Analysis of album cover advert 2



This is the Kooks album called Junk of the Heart. It was advertised in Kerrang magazine which is a rock/ indie type magazine and music radio station/ music TV channel.

I decided to evaluate this advertisement as it looks quite unusual and abstract but also because The Kooks are an indie band with contrast to what I have already researched like pop and rock, so it will broaden my knowledge on different genre styles.
I can immediately see this image has a painting effect, with loose painting strips at the top which is quite expressive and relaxed. This could enhance the type of music they release as they have a laid back and emotional appearance about their music, as they often sing about feelings or people like their songs 'naive' and 'she moves in her own way'. As they are a male band the voices in the songs are quite deep, however still portray a positive mood, where they emphasise and link this to the colours they use within the album cover as the blue, orange and green are all bright and optimistic. Furthermore the image on the cover, of the red haired girl waving her arms in the air, is such a relaxed and calm image as her facial expression is quite plain. Even though her action looks fun, her emotional portrayment doesn't really match it.

The bold white writing on the cover makes quite a statement as you look at it. As the colour white generally could symbolise purity and honesty it could maybe link to the album title of 'junk of the heart' as a love gesture. Even more so this open action the girl is doing with her arms up facing the camera in a long shot,could almost portray an openness to her heart and as if she's giving it away.

Music Video Genre Moodboard



I have created this moodboard to represent pop music, specifically male artists as me and my group are looking at doing a song by an artist called Ed Sheeran, who is from the pop genre. Therefore, we researched other successful soloists and groups both male and female to get a broad idea of the connotations used in a pop music video's.
The presentation of a pop artist is the main element of a pop video, as in this genre looks are one of the most important factors. They also usually have that 'wow factor' with artists like Lady Gaga and Rihanna either dressing inappropiately or outrageous to promote themselves aswell as their music. A lot of pop artists are also fashion icons, for example artists like Pixie Lott and The Saturdays have their own clothing range, which not only publicises them as a group but promotes their status and role within pop music.
However male pop artists can attract both female and male attention in different elements. For example a boyband called 'One Direction' are five attractive boys who girls absolutely go crazy for, and 99% of their fan base are teenage girls. Therefore their image is extremely important in their music role because if you're to be honest if they weren't that attractive they wouldn't be as successful as they are. However, boys can aspire to be like them because they're extremely fashionable and therefore are icon for boys.
However, like I previously mentioned women are seen more as a sex symbol, and are often seen in skimpy, outragous clothes to attract attention from men, especially in music video's where they edit specificity for the camera  to make them look how they desireable. For example in Kylie Minogue's video of Spinning Around, we can specifically tell that the camera has been used to film shots of her good body parts, even though she looks great originally, there may be some weak points about her which she may feel could put the audience off.

Robyn Album Cover analysis




This album cover is by the artist named Robyn. She is an electro- pop artist; with her singles reaching the top 40 in pop therefore it’s popular to a wide range of audiences.




My immediate response to this album cover is that it’s quite generic with a specific composition of the font, the artist and what she is wearing. The flower like cut out shapes which look stuck on her upper body on the shoulders and head, are very similar to hospital equipment, which gives almost a sinister feel to the album cover. However the pink colouring softens the effect as it’s typically a feminine colour.

Also her body language looks quite stiff and solid as she’s got a tilted head but still making eye contact with the audience. It looks quite robotic and generic, emphasizing the title of the album ‘body talk’. She is positioned in the centre of the cover showing her importance, but also as she is a solo artist so the spotlight is on her.

Her personality style is revealed immediately through her hairstyle, which is short, and bleach blonde. This emphasizes her individuality, however people could stereotype her as a lesbian from this image she is portraying. Also as she is bare on her shoulders it reflects a more elegant image to the audience in contrast to the harsh transparent black font, which is overlapping her, and the hospital like attachments on her body.

The camera, which is using a mid shot, reveals no emphasis of any status meanings like low or high however it gives the audience a clear view of the left side of her face, which is creatively attached with decoration. It gives her a general importance as there are no angles in this shot like low or high which will alter the feeling towards her if so. It’s important that we see this as it’s got a great meaning to the cover but also as her head is facing one side, the camera needs to be in a position so its is visible.

Her make-up is quite gentle and even, reflecting a less glamourous appearance in comparison to an artist in the pop genre. Even though she still looks great on the album cover, the decrease in concentration on the make-up on her face allows the audience to focus on the complete album cover and the components within it rather than only the artist herself.

I think the artist used this image as it's diverse and really emphasises the electro- pop genre which her music is classed as, due to the harsh contrast in colours and strong bold cuts of the shapes including the font and the body decoration which are windmill or flower like. It can also connote for some audiences what the music will be like in the album, because her facial expression is quite stern and abrasive therefore the music will maybe link to this feeling of concern.

Low budget idea's

Successful low budget music video


I think that this was one of the more successful low budget music video's produced. I have nothing but praise for this video, and it has gave me the confidence that I can produce something to this standard without having the high quality of camera's or amazing, beautiful locations. I also made sure that I made notes on any practical tips that I could have taken from this video.
Even though the majority of the clips are extremely fast paced and manic, I think that it is still pretty obvious that all of the shots are very well framed and that they are able to hold a shot steady when appropriate. Their first shot is of a long shot, which happens to be my favourite shot from their music video. Within the first few seconds of their music video beginning, they've already set a disturbing atmosphere which progresses as the song does. The use of the black and white effect emphasises the lack of life and positivity within this frame, which made it more wonderfully crafted.
One of the things that they were best at were framing the shots that included the typical elements of an intense, disturbing music video. The last shot shows a torso with blood trickling down it. I think that the colours and lighting that were used for this shot made it even more creepy and alluring. The high key lighting used upon the torso allows it to become a very strange blue colour, connoting the coldness and death of the blood. The red blood contrasts with the body, and the richness of the red underlines deaths authority and power.
They used a variety of shots to avoid any viewer fatigue, and I thought their long shots were their strengths throughout their music video. Their second image is probably one of their most creepiest, as it's just a ballerina toy going round and round. They took the same shot from many different angles and when they edited their video they also done each shot at different speeds. This was a very clever idea as it made the video more fast paced and intrigued the audience. in to continue watching. Once again, this was filmed in black and white which only intensified the creep setting that was already prominent.
Another thing that I really liked about their video was that they were clearly very selective about their props and how they were going to use them to fit in with what they were trying to achieve in their video. There is shot where we presume a girls hands are tied behind her back with rope. However, which made this shot a lot more exciting was the fact that this was edited so that we were shown the ending of the shot from the beginning rather than vise versa. The fact that we're shown the end at the start in an extremely fast pace delivers the purpose of their video perfectly. We're intrigued as to why she is tied up, and what all this build up of the fast shots is actually leading to.
On that note, the only point of improvement that I will comment on about this video is that there isn't actually a story to the video and I think that that is important in any video as the target audience must be able to relate to the artist. For example, there is a shot in the contact sheet where there is a mid shot of a girl taking a picture. This is one of the few pictures that are in colour. Therefore, it is been made evident that this shot is vital in their music video, however we as an audience are given a clue as to why as it doesn't really relate to anything.

This video is not as high a quality as some of the other low budget videos, however it does match some of the conventions of a girl band pop video. For instance, the four girls all have their own individual screen time, which is something you find in most pop videos, as well as their costume changes. Furthermore, there is a range of coloured lighting throughout the video, however all of it is high-key, showing the light-hearted and cheery mood of the video. The costumes all represent the different personalities of the band mates, and some have a slight cutting-edge look about them, matching the usual sex-appeal to a girl band video. Finally, similarly to most pop videos there is a narrative to the video to match the song.


Conventions of a Music Video

Camera Shots:
Music videos tend to include many long shots, close ups and mid shots. This is to create emphasis on the artist, location and emotions. Also, close ups are used not only to show emotions but to reflect the words of the song with the movement of the lips of the artist.





Camera Movement:
The movement of the camera is used to follow and trace the artist or band. Camera movements include tilts, pans, tracking and crane shots.

Mise-en-scene:
This refers to the arrangement of performers and props on stage or in a scene for a production of a music video or any other media text. Mise-en-scene puts importance on the representation of something. An example is, ‘Mad’ by Neyo. The mise-en scene involves him walking down a road alone, being in an isolated room. This reflects the isolation from his lover. Also, the props include hats and dark clothes which represent the down mood of the song. Similarly, the lighting is kept very dark as it is black and white; this connotes the angry and depressed mood. This is just one example of the mise en scene used to give an idea of how mise-en-scene works.

Editing:
Jump cuts is the predominant editing technique used in music videos. This is because this allows a sudden change from one scene to another. Similarly, transitions such as fade and dissolve are very common in music videos as they create a different effect to cuts.


Lighting:
Some music videos are black and white which help emphasise a particular mood and some videos have artificial lighting which put the artist/s in an enhanced look. 

Sound:
Sound is mainly the vocals or the song but in some cases such as Michael Jackson – Thriller, the producers can make the music video into a short film.

Props:
These are a vital in aiding to add to the scene and create significance on particular objects or people.

Costume:
This goes with the scenes in the song and reflects the genre. Costume is an important factor because it has a slight influence on how the viewers will dress because they use some of the celebrities as role models 

Colour:Colours tend to set the mood of the song through creating an atmosphere. For example, dark colours are used more in rock songs such as Kings of Leon and bright colours are seen to be used more in hip hop and pop videos.

Oasis 'Don't Look Back In Anger'


'Don't Look Back In Anger' is probably Oasis most successful song, and I think that this video is their most creative as I think it's very quirky but still has elements of a rock band music video. It is pretty obvious that they were inspired by 'The Beatles ' by the props they used like their glasses and the drum kit floating on the water as they play it. This is also another video that is moderately old, however still has connotations of a very good music video by using a variation of shots and angles, and continuously keeping their audience intrigued and also avoided viewer fatigue. I would say that Oasis music would target probably adults and teenagers, even though I would more say mostly adults. The music video connotes well with the concept of the song as the video I would say is very calm, and even though this is a rock song I would say that it is more mellow and chilled.
The first shot is a mid shot of the band in the back of a car, looking quite miserable and unhappy. What I like about Oasis video is that they use the stereotypical imagery of a rock band in their video's. For example, rock is stereotyped as drinking, drugs, girls and sex and this is often displayed in their video's. However, unlike most rock video's theres is quirky and interesting. The second shot is a close up of the lead singer (Noel Gallagher) singing into the camera. His expressionless face and withdrawn body language connotes with the concept of the song, as the song is about losing someone that he loved. The props used (like his glasses) are to represent the influence of his music which were 'The Beatles.' Also, he could have worn the glasses to hide any emotion that might of been behind this song.
In the third shot the idea of 'The Beatles' being their inspirtation is reinfornced by them making their music video very british. The long shot used of the typical british black cab emphasises what I said previously said about this music video being pretty disimilar to other rock video's as it's very calm and you could almost say peaceful. The fourth shot is also inspired by The Beetles with their instruments on the water and the use of the long shot is to frame the location of the background without drawing any attention anyway from the foreground image which is of one of the band members.
The fifth shot is my most favourite shot of the whole music video. It has a focus pull shot and is focused on a woman standing on the left hand side of the frame. Behind her follows a line of other women who are out of focus and slightly blurry. As the song is about the break up of women, you could assume that these are all of his ex girlfriends that he has left. They're all pretty similar, as they're all wearing outfits
