Analysis of Rock Videos 1

Guns N Roses 'November Rain

For Guns N Roses 'November Rain' video they make it very dramatic and quite over the top, and really deliver the factors of a rock video. This video is very old in comparison to the other video's that I have analysed, but still manage to be creative and develop and interesting story. The story that unfolds follows the lead singer and his fictional wife, and they're filmed on their wedding day where drastic events end up take place.
The first shot is a close up of their party lifestyle, which allows their audience to see their relaxed body language and how happy they are. They are seen drinking a lot and smoking, giving the stereotypical imagery of rock stars and that they have a crazy lifestyle. I think that during these few scenes their costumes/hair and make up play a vital role within their music video as they're also given the stereotypical image of a rock star. Their long hair, funky clothes and the props given such as guiters and cigarettes makes them seem 'cool' and therefore targets their audience. I would say that their image and music is most probably influential on young adults, rather than teenagers or older people. For the second shot they've use mid shots and high key lighting is used, which is rarely used in any of their shots during their music video as the low key lighting used connotes with the concept of the song. As I've mentioned in my other posts, the concept of the song must always relate to the music.
For the third shot and a few other shots within the music video, there are scenes of Guns N Roses performing at a venue to all of their fans. This highlights their sucess and popularity, and gives their audience a feel of what one of their concerts may be like and encourages them to perhaps go. I think that in the shots where they're performing there shots are framed really well, as you get a variation of close ups, low angle shots and a  two shot of each member in the rock band. This individually represents the role of each member of the band and therefore avoids any viewer fatigue. There is a contrast of lighting used, as their audience is shown in low key lighting whereas Guns N Roses have shot in high key lighting which could demonstrate the importance of them as artists and their songs. The 4th shot is included in one of their longest scenes where one of their more famous members Slash walks out of the church and plays is guitar in the stranded desert where the church is located. The shots included in this scene are one of my favourites, as even though the same setting, props and lighting are used throughout they still manage to avoid viewer fatigue by using clever, interesting shots such as close ups, establishing shots, high and low angled shots and many more. The 4th shot is an extreme long shot of Slash playing his guitar once he left the church. This could represent the importance of music to him, how it overshadows any religion or beliefs that he might have.
